Fenella trained as a doctor at St George’s Hospital Medical School in London and has trained and worked exclusively in London, initially in paediatrics before specialising in Emergency Medicine including six months on London’s Air Ambulance.
For the past 9 years Fenella has held senior management roles within the NHS, working for both the London Ambulance Service NHS Trust (LAS) and Barts Health NHS Trust where she is an Emergency Medicine Consultant on the Royal London site. Having joined LAS in 2008 Fenella was appointed Executive Medical Director in March 2016.
As a senior leader in the only pan-London acute NHS Trust Fenella has a unique understanding into differences in standards and quality of care provided by Urgent and Emergency Care providers. Fenella has taken a leading role in the transformation of LAS from a purely emergency service to a central provider of urgent care across London. She has led and delivered on a wide range of projects at a provider, regional and national level including the development of advanced paramedics for critical care and urgent care, the implementation of a multi-disciplinary 999 clinical hub and NHS 111 clinical assessment service, pan-London improvement in hospital handovers and providing expert clinical support to NHSE for the Ambulance Response Programme and Ambulance Data Set.
Fenella has a particular interest in the planning for major public events, both for the NHS and voluntary sector, to ensure the impact on primary and secondary health care provision is minimised. She has significant experience of major incidents having been deployed as a doctor at 7/7 and providing the strategic clinical support for the major incidents of 2017.
Fenella is an examiner for the Royal College of Emergency Medicine and educational supervisor for emergency medicine trainees as well being responsible for the delivery of clinical education and standards for the LAS.
